2014Pilot Project for the Intercomparison of Seawater Salinity Measurements

Seawater salinity is one of the key parameters observed in the ocean by the marine meteorological and oceanographic community. The accuracy of salinity measurements is essential to many applications, including marine scientific research and ocean survey.

At present, salinity (or conductivity) is measured in situ with various types of instruments, including for example CTD, Argos profiling floats, moored data buoys, and XCTDs. For quality control purposes, natural seawater sampled at sea can be used for salinity analysis in the laboratory and for comparison with the corresponding in situ data. Therefore, salinity measurement capability of laboratories would influence the comparison results with in situ data.

Substantial proficiency differences for measuring salinity exist amongst the laboratories on the globe. To better understand these differences, and provide effective services to global ocean observation programme under JCOMM frame, on the 5th session of JCOMM Observations Coordination Group (OCG-5, Silver Spring, Maryland, USA, Sept. 2013), JCOMM has adopted the advice of establishing an intercomparison pilot project for salinity measurement from RMIC-AP, setting up an organizing committee, and designated RMIC-AP as the designer and coordinator of the salinity measurement intercomparison pilot project. In accordance with the Work Plan & Implementation Scheme, RMIC-AP will start accepting participants’ registration, distributing seawater samples, collecting measured data among laboratories, analyzing and processing data, and will finally submit a final report to JCOMM in order to assist JCOMM to evaluate salinity measurement capabilities of those participating laboratories, and thus provide guiding advices to global observation programme under JCOMM frame.

Details about the pilot project, including organizing committee, workplan, implementation scheme, and operations guidelines can be found below:
